Indian badminton stars face a demanding start at the upcoming Denmark Open 2026, with high-profile players PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen handed difficult draws in the opening round of the USD 950,000 Super 750 tournament. The event, which begins this Tuesday, serves as a critical test for the Indian contingent following a series of mixed results on the international circuit.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu faces a formidable challenge in her first match, where she is set to square off against the world No. 1 and defending champion, An Se-young. Sindhu, a former world champion, enters the tournament after a quarterfinal finish at the Arctic Open last week. However, she faces a significant psychological hurdle, having lost all 10 of her previous encounters against the South Korean star.

Key Indian Contenders and Tournament Outlook

In the men's singles draw, Lakshya Sen is aiming to regain his momentum after a challenging individual campaign at the Asian Games. Sen, who reached the All England Championships final earlier this year and made history as the only Indian man to reach an Olympic semi-final in 2024, has recently struggled with a back injury. He faces a tough opening test against the third-seeded Chou Tien Chen.

The Indian squad also features rising talent Ayush Shetty, who will look to build on his breakthrough 2025 season, which included a US Open Super 300 title and a notable victory over former world No. 1 Shi Yuqi at the World Championships. He is scheduled to play Indonesia's Alwi Farhan. Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth, the 2017 Denmark Open champion, returns to the venue to face France's Arnaud Merkle.

The women's singles field includes several emerging players, such as Tanvi Sharma, who secured her maiden BWF World Tour title at the Taipei Open in August, and Ashmita Chaliha, the Korea Masters champion. They are joined by Devika Sihag and Unnati Hooda, the latter of whom recently impressed with a quarterfinal run at the Asian Games.

In the doubles categories, the men's pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are looking to recover from an early exit at the Asian Games. The fifth seeds, who claimed titles at the Singapore Open and China Masters this year, face a difficult opening match against China's He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu. In women's doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, fresh off a bronze medal at the World Championships, will lead the Indian challenge against Chinese Taipei's Yan Fei Chen and Hsieh Pei Shan.
