According to Bryant, the incident began after two drivers allegedly cut him off in traffic. He stated that he approached the individuals at a Mexican restaurant to encourage safer driving, but the interaction quickly turned into a heated verbal argument. Bryant alleges that one of the men, described as a young adult, threatened him by insinuating he would use a firearm. Bryant responded by telling the man that if he intended to draw a weapon, he should be prepared to use it. No weapon was ever produced, though the man began recording the encounter on his mobile phone, which Bryant then knocked from his hand.
Police Response and Legal Proceedings
Following the altercation, the man contacted law enforcement. Bryant noted that he encouraged the call, believing that police would investigate the alleged threat made against him. Upon arrival, officers held all three men at gunpoint and placed them in handcuffs. Capt. Blas Hernandez, a spokesperson for the Southlake Police Department, stated in a news release that officers approached the scene with weapons drawn as a standard precaution due to 911 reports indicating a possible weapon was involved.
Bryant has expressed frustration with the subsequent investigation, characterizing the police response as one-sided. He claims that officers relied solely on the recording provided by the other party and failed to review available surveillance footage of the preceding traffic incident. Ultimately, Bryant was the only individual to receive a citation, which is for assault by contact and carries a fine of $367. An initial hearing regarding the matter is scheduled for November 20.
Reflecting on the event, Bryant emphasized his concern for his family, noting that his girlfriend and two daughters arrived at the scene while he was being detained. He stated that his primary goal in speaking out is to protect his reputation and ensure that law enforcement conducts proper due diligence in their investigations. Bryant remains a notable figure in Dallas sports history, holding the franchise record for touchdown receptions with 73, alongside 531 career receptions and 7,459 receiving yards.
