Cardinals wide receiver Jalen Brooks ruled out for season following emergency wrist surgery

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Jalen Brooks has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. The announcement followed a social media post from the player on Monday, confirming that he required emergency surgery to address a significant wrist injury.

Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur revealed that the injury occurred during the first quarter of the team's recent outing. Despite the severity of the issue, Brooks opted to remain in the game without alerting the coaching staff. LaFleur praised the receiver's resilience, noting that while the injury was not immediately apparent to those on the sidelines, game film later showed the player attempting to manage the discomfort throughout the contest.

Adjusting the offensive rotation

The loss of Brooks creates a void in the Cardinals' receiving corps, particularly given his recent elevation in the team's offensive scheme. Following the trade of Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Houston Texans on October 11, Brooks had stepped into the X receiver role. During that period, he recorded five receptions for 81 yards and appeared to be trending toward a career-best season in terms of yardage.

Addressing the immediate future of the position, LaFleur confirmed that the team will move to a committee approach to cover the vacancy. Rookie Reggie Virgil is slated to see an increase in snaps at the X receiver position, with Kendrick Bourne and Simi Fehoko also expected to contribute to the rotation.

Updates on injury recovery

While the team navigates the loss of Brooks, there is potential for reinforcements elsewhere on the roster. Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is scheduled to return to practice on Wednesday after a two-week absence caused by a left ankle injury. Coach LaFleur indicated that Love's availability for Sunday's game will depend on his progress throughout the week of training.

Defensively, the outlook is mixed. Cornerback Max Melton and safety Andrew Wingard are both expected to return to practice on Wednesday as they manage respective knee injuries. Melton was sidelined for the recent matchup against the Broncos, while Wingard has missed the team's last three games. Conversely, defensive tackle Walter Nolen III is not expected to participate in Wednesday's session as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury that kept him out of the lineup last Sunday.
