Harry Kane Ends 25-Year Wait for England with Ballon d'Or Triumph

Harry Kane has reached the pinnacle of individual footballing success, claiming the Ballon d'Or at a ceremony in London. The Bayern Munich striker’s victory marks a historic moment for English football, as he becomes the first player from his nation to secure the prestigious trophy in 25 years, following Michael Owen’s win in 2001.

The 33-year-old’s recognition comes after a prolific campaign in which he netted 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country. His clinical form was instrumental in Bayern Munich’s domestic league and cup double, while he also contributed six goals during England’s third-place finish at the World Cup. Speaking after the event, Kane expressed his pride in bringing the award back to his home city, describing the achievement as a special milestone in his career.

A Night of Recognition for Putellas and Spanish Football

While Kane claimed the men’s top honour, Alexia Putellas reaffirmed her status in the women’s game by securing her third Ballon d'Or. The award recognises her pivotal role in Barcelona’s Champions League-winning season before her subsequent move to London City Lionesses. This victory marks a return to the summit for Putellas, who previously won the award in 2021 and 2022, overcoming a significant knee injury that had disrupted her career trajectory four years ago.

The evening also highlighted the dominance of Spanish football in the coaching ranks. Luis de la Fuente was named men’s coach of the year for leading Spain to World Cup glory, finishing ahead of Mikel Arteta and Luis Enrique. In the women’s category, Barcelona’s Pere Romeu took home the coaching award. Spain’s success extended to the goalkeeping honours as well, with Unai Simon and Cata Coll receiving the awards for the best men’s and women’s goalkeepers, respectively.

In the final standings for the men’s Ballon d'Or, Kylian Mbappe finished in second place, continuing his wait for the award despite being the top scorer in the Champions League, La Liga, and the World Cup. Barcelona’s 19-year-old winger Lamine Yamal, who collected the young talent of the year award for the third time, rounded out the top three. Although Paris Saint-Germain missed out on individual player honours, the club was named men’s club of the year following their second consecutive Champions League title.
