Harry Kane Claims Ballon d'Or as England's First Winner in 25 Years

Harry Kane has been crowned the winner of the Ballon d'Or, securing the prestigious individual honour during a ceremony held in London on Monday. The 33-year-old Bayern Munich forward’s victory marks a significant milestone for English football, as he becomes the first player from his nation to claim the award since Michael Owen in 2001. Kane triumphed over fellow nominees Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe to secure the accolade.

The event, which took place on English soil for the first time, experienced a delayed start due to heavy traffic in the capital. Despite the logistical challenges, the evening concluded with a historic moment for the hometown hero. Kane’s recognition follows an exceptional individual campaign in which he netted 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country, playing a pivotal role in Bayern Munich’s domestic league and cup double. He also contributed six goals during England’s third-place finish at the World Cup.

A Career-Defining Achievement for Kane and Putellas

Reflecting on the achievement, Kane expressed his pride in bringing the trophy back to England. He noted that his decision to join Bayern Munich in 2023 was a calculated risk aimed at elevating his game, which ultimately allowed him to reach new heights as a striker. While his career has previously been defined by near-misses in major finals, including the 2019 Champions League and two European Championship deciders, this award serves as the crowning individual achievement of his professional journey.

In the women’s category, Alexia Putellas reclaimed the Ballon d'Or, marking her third time winning the award. Her victory highlights a successful return to form following an anterior cruciate ligament injury that had previously interrupted her career. Putellas, who played a key role in Barcelona’s Champions League success last season before her subsequent move to London City Lionesses, described the achievement as the culmination of a perfect story after 14 seasons with the Spanish club. She succeeds her compatriot Aitana Bonmati as the recipient of the honour.

Recognising Rising Talent and Coaching Excellence

The ceremony also highlighted emerging stars and tactical leadership. Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal was awarded the prize for young talent of the year for the third consecutive time, though he finished third in the overall Ballon d'Or voting. Kylian Mbappe secured second place in the main category, despite his prolific scoring record across the World Cup, Champions League, and La Liga failing to translate into major collective trophies for his teams.

Coaching excellence was also celebrated, with Spain’s Luis de la Fuente named men’s coach of the year following his team’s World Cup success. He beat out competition from Mikel Arteta and Luis Enrique to receive the award. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Pere Romeu was recognised as the women’s coach of the year. Additional honours included the best goalkeeper awards, which were presented to Unai Simon and Cata Coll, while Paris Saint-Germain received the title of men’s club of the year.
