Carson Wentz to Start for Vikings Against Bears as Kyler Murray Remains Sidelined

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed on Friday that Carson Wentz will take the starting quarterback role for Sunday's matchup against the Chicago Bears. The decision comes as Kyler Murray continues his recovery process following a concussion sustained during the team's Week 1 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

Murray’s injury occurred early in his debut for the Vikings, specifically on the 11th play of the game. After a third-down scramble, the quarterback took a hit from Packers defenders Lukas Van Ness and Javon Bullard. Observers noted that Murray appeared motionless on the turf, with teammates reporting he exhibited a fencing posture, which is a recognized symptom of brain trauma. Although he was able to walk off the field independently and later interacted with staff in the locker room, the organization has opted to prioritize his health by allowing him more time to recover, despite his participation in all three practices throughout the week.

Wentz Steps In Following Strong Relief Appearance

The transition to Wentz marks the 11th time during O'Connell’s five-year tenure that the Vikings have been forced to change their starting quarterback mid-season. Many of these adjustments have been injury-related, including previous instances involving Kirk Cousins in 2023 and J.J. McCarthy in 2025. Wentz, who was re-signed by the franchise in March to bolster depth, brings significant experience to the position.

The veteran signal-caller proved his readiness in the season opener against Green Bay. After stepping in for the injured Murray, Wentz completed 12 of 19 pass attempts for 133 yards and recorded three touchdowns. His performance validated the team's decision to prioritize his experience when finalizing the depth chart during training camp. Last season, Wentz started five games for Minnesota in place of McCarthy, securing a 2-3 record before his campaign was cut short by left shoulder surgery.
