Caleb Williams Defies NFL Uniform Policy to Continue Wearing Caddix Cleats

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has confirmed he will continue wearing Caddix cleats for upcoming games, despite receiving an $11,941 fine from the NFL for a uniform violation. The league mandates that players only wear footwear from official partners—Nike, Adidas, or Under Armour—or cover any unauthorized logos, a rule Williams has opted to bypass in favor of the specialized footwear.

The controversy stems from the quarterback's appearance in the Week 6 victory over Atlanta, where he first drew the league's ire. Despite the financial penalty, which he has officially appealed, Williams indicated on Wednesday that he does not intend to obscure the Caddix branding during the Bears' next matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on November 2. It remains uncertain if he will face further disciplinary action for wearing the cleats during Chicago’s recent win over the New England Patriots.

Focus on Injury Prevention and Performance

For Williams, the decision to wear the non-approved brand is rooted in personal health and longevity rather than a desire to challenge league regulations. The quarterback, who missed three games earlier this season with a hamstring injury, emphasized that the Caddix cleats utilize patented SmartStuds technology. This design is intended to flex during cutting and pivoting, which the manufacturer claims reduces rotational torque on the ankles and knees, potentially lowering the risk of non-contact injuries.

"I'm focused on being able to be out here for the guys," Williams said. "If that can give me a small percentage up and it works, then that's what I'm gonna do." He noted that since switching to the brand, he has experienced less discomfort in his joints and feet compared to previous footwear. Williams, who has become the first Bears quarterback since 2018 to record consecutive 300-yard passing games, believes the science behind the cleats provides a tangible benefit for maintaining his availability throughout the grueling NFL season.

Support from Caddix and Veteran Peers

Williams is not alone in his stance, as an estimated 40 NFL players currently utilize the brand. The company has scheduled a hearing with the NFL for November 10 to address the uniform policy. Furthermore, there is significant external support for the quarterback; both Caddix founder Jack Rasmussen and veteran NFL quarterback Joe Flacco have pledged to cover any fines Williams incurs if his appeal is unsuccessful.

Flacco, who serves as an athlete advisor for the company, defended the choice of equipment, stating that he has worn the cleats for years and trusts their performance benefits. Rasmussen echoed this sentiment, maintaining that the safety metrics of the footwear justify their use regardless of the league's marketing-driven uniform policies. As the situation develops, Williams remains committed to prioritizing his physical health as he prepares for the remainder of the season.
