In a significant move for the Denver Nuggets, six-time NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract worth $3.9 million. This decision, confirmed by sources on Friday, follows a competitive free agency period during which DeRozan engaged with several teams, including the Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, and New Orleans Pelicans. Ultimately, he opted for a pivotal role with the Nuggets, aiming to enhance his chances of contending in the Western Conference.

Strong Recruitment Efforts by the Nuggets

The Nuggets' management and coaching staff made a concerted effort to attract DeRozan, emphasizing how his skills would synergize with those of star players Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. The franchise showcased its vision for DeRozan as a key playmaker, which played a crucial role in his decision to join the team. While there was notable interest from the Miami Heat, where DeRozan maintained communication with Bam Adebayo throughout the summer, the Heat ultimately shifted their focus to Klay Thompson. Reports indicate that the Heat plan to sign Thompson once he clears waivers following a buyout with the Dallas Mavericks.

DeRozan's journey to free agency began when the Sacramento Kings waived him earlier this offseason, allowing him to explore new opportunities. At the time of his release, only $10 million of his $25.7 million contract for the 2026-27 season was guaranteed. Despite the transition, DeRozan has proven to be one of the league's most consistent scorers, averaging 18.4 points per game on nearly 50% shooting during his 17th NBA season. Prior to last season, he had maintained an impressive streak of averaging over 20 points for 12 consecutive seasons.

Proven Durability and Experience

DeRozan's reliability on the court is underscored by his availability; he played in all but five games last season, continuing a trend of durability that has seen him participate in at least 70 games for five straight seasons. His extensive experience in the league includes nine successful years with the Toronto Raptors, followed by three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs and another three with the Chicago Bulls before his stint with the Kings. As he joins the Nuggets, DeRozan brings not only his scoring prowess but also a wealth of experience that could prove invaluable in Denver's pursuit of a championship.
