Kubiak extends competition for Raiders' quarterback position: 'We have one more week'

Raiders Coach Remains Noncommittal on Starting Quarterback

In a recent preseason matchup, Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak refrained from naming a starting quarterback for the upcoming regular season. This decision follows the team's 22-20 victory over the Houston Texans, where rookie Fernando Mendoza took the helm while veteran Kirk Cousins was sidelined. "We got another week. I don't want anyone to be comfortable in their job," Kubiak stated, emphasizing the importance of competition across all positions. Cousins has participated in only one drive throughout the preseason, as several key starters, including defensive end Maxx Crosby and running back Ashton Jeanty, also rested during the game at Reliant Stadium.

Kubiak explained that the decision to rest the starters was influenced by the joint practice held earlier in the week, which the coaching staff treated as a game for many players. Mendoza, who played the entire first half, completed 8 of 15 passes for 86 yards, though he did throw an interception. His longest completion was a 22-yard pass to wide receiver Jalen Nailor, who, along with Jack Bech, was one of the few projected starters to see action in the game. Quarterback Aidan O'Connell took over in the second half, throwing for 166 yards and scoring a crucial rushing touchdown in the final moments of the game.

Mendoza Reflects on Learning Experience

After the game, Mendoza shared his thoughts on the experience, acknowledging the steep learning curve that comes with playing in the NFL. "I knew going into the game that it was going to be a great experience as a first start in the NFL preseason," he remarked. However, he also recognized the high stakes involved, noting that a single mistake could lead to significant consequences. This was evident during his opening drive against the Texans, where he threw a pick-six to linebacker Wade Woodaz after attempting to check down to rookie running back Mike Washington Jr. Woodaz intercepted the pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown.

Mendoza's struggles continued as he faced challenges connecting with rookie wide receiver Malik Benson, resulting in two incompletions. He acknowledged the need for improvement in his pocket movement, stating, "Maybe stepping up in the pocket, maybe stepping side to side to give [me] a little bit more time and try to best serve my teammates." As the preseason progresses, Mendoza is focused on refining his skills and preparing for the competitive landscape of the NFL.
