The transfer, confirmed by the Premier League side on Tuesday, makes Baleba the third midfield arrival at the club this window, following the signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. A Strategic Addition to the Old Trafford Engine Room
United’s interest in the former Lille player dates back to last year, though the club previously opted against a move due to Brighton's valuation. Despite a challenging 2024/25 season, the Manchester hierarchy remained convinced of the player's potential, citing his defensive metrics and ball-carrying ability as key reasons for the pursuit. During the 2024/25 campaign, Baleba ranked among the league's top performers for defensive contributions, placing sixth in combined tackles and interceptions, and fourth for progressive ball carries per 90 minutes.
Director of football Jason Wilcox highlighted the unique profile the midfielder brings to the squad, noting his combativity and athleticism. According to club data, Baleba featured in the top eight per cent of players for combined tackles and interceptions and the top one per cent for second balls won during his final season on the south coast.
Looking Ahead to the New Campaign
Baleba, who made 112 appearances for Brighton after arriving from France in 2023, expressed his enthusiasm for the move, describing the club as his dream destination. The midfielder is set to work under the guidance of Michael Carrick, a prospect he identified as a major factor in his decision to join the 20-time league champions. He has signed a five-year contract, which includes an option for an additional year.
While the transfer represents a major boost for the squad, Baleba is currently sidelined as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury sustained during the pre-season. Upon his return to full fitness, he will compete for a starting position alongside established squad members including Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Tielemans, and Santos.
