Indian goalkeepers Savita and Bichu share emotional tribute to late coach Simon Zijp

Ahead of their pivotal World Cup fixture against Australia this Sunday, Indian goalkeepers Savita Punia and Bichu Devi experienced a deeply moving moment during their training session. The duo was approached by Caroline Busch, the wife of the late Dutch hockey goalkeeping coach Simon Zijp, who had been instrumental in their development since early last year.

Zijp, a respected figure in the hockey community, had been scheduled to return to India last November to continue his work with the squad. However, his sudden passing in October left a significant void for the players he mentored. Seeking to honor the strong connection her husband shared with the Indian goalkeepers, Caroline traveled from The Hague to meet them, offering a gesture of support that resonated deeply with both athletes.

A lasting legacy of mentorship and support

During the meeting, Caroline presented the goalkeepers with a heartfelt personal note, chocolates, and traditional wooden shoes, which serve as a cultural symbol of the Netherlands. Reflecting on the encounter, she shared that the note contained messages of encouragement and revealed how highly Zijp regarded both Savita and Bichu, wishing them continued success in their careers.

For Savita, the veteran goalkeeper, the impact of Zijp’s coaching extended far beyond technical drills. She credited his guidance with helping her navigate the mental challenges of a difficult injury rehabilitation period. Zijp had encouraged her to document her thoughts in a diary, a practice that helped her maintain focus and motivation during her recovery. Savita noted that the entire team was deeply affected by the news of his passing, highlighting how quickly they had formed a meaningful bond with him.

Fulfilling a promise to honor a mentor

The meeting was facilitated by the current goalkeeping coach, Pirmin Blaak, who had a long-standing professional relationship with Zijp. Having been coached by the late mentor himself, Blaak understood the significance of the relationship and ensured the encounter took place. Savita expressed her sincere gratitude to both Blaak for arranging the meeting and to Caroline for making the journey during such a challenging time.

The encounter provided a moment of closure and reflection for the players as they prepare for the intensity of the World Cup. Savita described the meeting as a lifelong memory, emphasizing that the blessings and well-wishes received from Caroline would serve as a source of inspiration as they head into their upcoming match against Australia.
