Exclusive Access to Football Legends
Rod Thornley, who dedicated nearly two decades to Manchester United, amassed a remarkable collection of jerseys and memorabilia during his time with the club. His unique position allowed him to forge connections with some of football's biggest stars. Ahead of the 2012 friendly match, Thornley reached out to former FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, requesting Messi's jersey. “I messaged Gerard Pique a couple of days before the game and said, 'I never ask you for anything, but I need Messi's shirt from this one,'” Thornley recounted.
After the match concluded, Pique facilitated Thornley’s access to the Barcelona locker room. “At the end of the game, Gerard came into our dressing room, grabbed me, and walked me straight into theirs. Messi still had the shirt on his back,” Thornley explained. The moment was memorable; Messi not only removed his jersey but also signed it for Thornley while they shared a handshake. “It was incredible,” Thornley reflected on the experience.
Contrasting Journeys of Two Icons
While the Messi jersey holds a special place in Thornley’s collection, the Cristiano Ronaldo jersey, although not worn in a match, carries its own significance. It was prepared for a game and features a personal message from Ronaldo, acknowledging Thornley’s previous work with him during their time at Manchester United. This auction highlights the enduring legacy of both players and the personal connections that can be formed in the world of professional sports.
