Kylian Mbappe Issues Apology to Chinese Fans Following Meme Controversy

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has issued a formal apology to his Chinese fanbase following a significant backlash sparked by his comments regarding a meme featuring former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. The controversy, which emerged after a video circulated online on Monday, led to three Chinese companies terminating their commercial partnerships with the French international.

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, the forward expressed regret for his remarks, acknowledging that his words were ill-judged. He stated that he now understands the hurt caused to many people in China and within Chinese communities globally. Emphasising that his comments were not intended to cause offence, he reiterated his deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, offering a sincere apology to those affected by the incident.

La Liga Responds to Commercial Fallout

The incident drew an immediate reaction from La Liga, which moved to distance itself from the player's personal remarks. The league issued an official statement expressing regret for the offence caused and confirming that the comments did not reflect the views of the organisation or its member clubs. La Liga stressed that its core values remain rooted in respect, unity, and coexistence among diverse cultures.

La Liga president Javier Tebas also addressed the situation personally, acknowledging the long-standing support of Chinese fans and the trust they have placed in Spanish football. Tebas stated that he accepts the responsibility to improve cultural awareness among players and clubs, announcing plans to implement a new communication and awareness protocol. This initiative aims to prevent similar incidents in the future and will be developed in collaboration with clubs to ensure that the relationship with Chinese partners and supporters is nurtured through concrete action.
