Abhishek Sharma Blasts Century as India Clinches T20I Series Against New Zealand

Abhishek Sharma delivered a masterclass in aggressive batting, powering India to a comprehensive six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20I on Tuesday. The win secures an unassailable 3-0 lead for the visitors in the five-match series, with the result confirmed in emphatic fashion as India chased down the target with 40 balls to spare.

The opener’s explosive 113 off just 38 deliveries was the highlight of the match, featuring 11 sixes and nine fours. By reaching his century in only 35 balls, Sharma dismantled the New Zealand bowling attack and moved into second place on the all-time list for the most innings with 10 or more sixes in men's T20 Internationals. He has now achieved this feat three times, moving past West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who recorded two such performances during his career.

A Record-Breaking Display of Power Hitting

Sharma’s innings was defined by his ability to clear the boundary at will. His 11 sixes were instrumental in keeping India well ahead of the required run rate throughout the chase. The partnership at the top of the order was equally devastating, as Sharma combined with 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for a 133-run opening stand. Sooryavanshi provided excellent support, contributing 45 runs from 19 balls before the duo helped India reach 118 runs without loss during the Powerplay.

The onslaught eventually ended when Kyle Jamieson dismissed Sharma, with Glenn Phillips taking the catch at deep mid-wicket. Despite the wicket, the damage was already done, allowing India to cruise to victory in just 13.2 overs. The list of players with the most innings featuring 10 or more sixes is currently led by Austria’s Karanbir Singh, who has five such scores to his name.

New Zealand’s Total Proves Insufficient

Earlier in the day, New Zealand set a competitive target of 198/3 after batting first. Daryl Mitchell anchored the innings with an unbeaten 89 off 52 balls, while Finn Allen added 40. Although the hosts managed to keep their total just under the 200-run mark, the Indian bowling unit successfully restricted the scoring in the final stages of the innings to keep the target within reach.

With the series already decided, India will look to maintain their momentum in the remaining two matches. The victory marks a significant milestone for the squad, showcasing their depth and ability to dominate in high-scoring encounters away from home.
