Jorge Jesus Denies Responsibility for Cristiano Ronaldo's International Retirement

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has publicly addressed the sudden international retirement of Cristiano Ronaldo, firmly rejecting any suggestion that he bears responsibility for the legendary forward’s decision to step away from the national team. Ronaldo, who concluded his illustrious career with a record 146 goals in 234 appearances, announced his departure via a video message, catching the coaching staff and the public by surprise.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Jesus clarified that he had no prior knowledge of the announcement and did not attempt to reach out to the player following the news. The coach emphasized that he learned of the decision simultaneously with the rest of the world, maintaining that the timing of Ronaldo’s exit was an inevitability given the duration of his own contract with the Portuguese Football Federation, which extends until 2030.

Addressing the Departure and Future Expectations

Reflecting on the circumstances, Jesus noted that had Ronaldo chosen to continue, he would have remained a part of his tactical plans for the upcoming Nations League campaign. However, the coach remained steadfast in his stance regarding his own role in the situation. While acknowledging that he may have appeared to rush certain processes, he explicitly stated that he does not feel guilty for the events that led to the forward’s exit from the squad.

The tension surrounding the situation follows a turbulent period for the national team. Ronaldo’s final appearance came in a 1-0 victory over Wales in September. Shortly thereafter, he was an unused substitute in a 2-1 win against Norway, after which he departed the field without engaging with the travelling fans. Following his exit from the team’s camp in Copenhagen, the Portuguese Football Federation issued a 30-day suspension and a 255-euro fine. In his own public statement, Ronaldo had accused the manager of failing to keep his word on two separate occasions.

When questioned on whether the high-profile fallout has increased the scrutiny on his position, Jesus dismissed the notion that his job security is tied to this specific conflict. He pointed to the team’s recent performance as evidence of his success, noting that Portugal has successfully qualified for the quarter-finals—a feat matched only by Spain among their peers. For Jesus, the pressure to deliver results remains a standard expectation of his role, regardless of the personnel changes within the squad.
