The Orissa High Court has halted the upcoming Hockey India elections, originally set for December 5, following a legal challenge from the Hockey Association of Odisha regarding membership status and governance.

Orissa High Court Stays Hockey India Elections Following Membership Dispute

The Orissa High Court has issued an interim stay on the Hockey India elections, which were originally scheduled to take place on December 5. The directive, delivered by a single-judge bench presided over by Justice R. K. Pattanaik, halts the electoral process until further notice as the court prepares to address ongoing disputes regarding the national federation's governance.

The legal intervention follows a petition submitted by the Hockey Association of Odisha. The state body challenged the validity of showcause notices issued by Hockey India, as well as a contentious decision to reclassify the association's status from a Permanent Member to an Associate Member. This reclassification was reportedly formalised during Hockey India’s 120th Executive Meeting held on October 6.

Legal Challenges and Governance Disputes

Central to the petition is the argument that the actions taken by the Hockey India Executive Committee lack legal standing. The Hockey Association of Odisha has contended that the showcause notices and the subsequent membership reclassification are invalid because the term of the incumbent Executive Committee had already concluded on September 30.

By challenging the authority of the outgoing committee to implement such significant structural changes, the state association has effectively paused the national body's transition process. The court has acknowledged the gravity of the claims, leading to the stay of the December 5 election date.

The matter is far from resolved, as the Orissa High Court has scheduled the next hearing for December 9. Until the court provides further directives, the electoral proceedings for Hockey India remain suspended, leaving the federation's immediate leadership transition in a state of uncertainty.
