Jose Mourinho Backs Cristiano Ronaldo to Continue Playing Career Following International Retirement

Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has spoken out regarding Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to step away from international football, asserting that the Portuguese icon’s career is far from over. Speaking ahead of his side’s upcoming fixture against Valencia, Mourinho addressed the announcement made by the 41-year-old forward on Thursday, which confirmed the end of his record-breaking tenure with the national team.

Ronaldo, who previously played under Mourinho during a three-year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu, concluded his international journey with a staggering 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal. While the decision marks a significant milestone in his sporting life, Mourinho remains convinced that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner is not yet ready to hang up his boots entirely. He noted that anyone familiar with Ronaldo’s mindset understands that he continues to harbor specific goals for his professional future.

Mourinho Reflects on Ronaldo's International Departure

The international retirement follows a period of turbulence for the veteran striker. Ronaldo had been involved in a public disagreement with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus in late September, reportedly stemming from his refusal to participate in a UEFA Nations League fixture. The fallout resulted in Ronaldo departing the national team camp and receiving a 30-day suspension, a conclusion to his international career that Mourinho clearly found underwhelming.

Mourinho expressed a desire for a more fitting conclusion to such a storied international career, which notably included captaining Portugal to glory at UEFA Euro 2016. Despite the abrupt nature of his exit from the national setup, the manager emphasized that the focus should now shift to the next chapter of the player's life. Ronaldo is currently committed to his club career with Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, where he remains under contract until June 2027.
