The All India Football Federation has reportedly informed the South Asian Football Federation that it will not send a team to the upcoming SAFF Championship, casting doubt on the future of the regional tournament.

India’s Participation in SAFF Championship in Doubt Following Withdrawal Reports

The future of the upcoming SAFF Championship has been thrown into uncertainty following reports that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has informed the South Asian Football Federation of its decision to withdraw from the tournament. Despite earlier assurances from officials that the defending champions would compete in the event hosted in Bangladesh, the latest development suggests a significant shift in plans for the nine-time winners.

The potential absence of India, the most successful nation in the history of the competition, would represent a major blow to the tournament. The team enters this cycle as the defending champions, having secured the title in 2023 after defeating Kuwait on home soil. While the news has caused concern among organisers, officials from both the South Asian Football Federation and the Bangladesh Football Federation have stated they have not received formal confirmation of a withdrawal, with some describing the reports as premature or contradictory to previous commitments.

Conflicting Reports and Scheduling Challenges

The uncertainty surrounding India’s involvement appears to stem from a conflict between the national team’s schedule and the domestic Indian Super League (ISL) calendar. The SAFF Championship is slated to run from November 4 to 17, a period that overlaps with several key league fixtures. Notably, the tournament dates were previously moved from September to November specifically to accommodate India’s potential commitments in the ASEAN Cup. However, India ultimately did not participate in that event, opting instead to focus on FIFA friendlies.

The logistical friction is compounded by the reluctance of ISL clubs to release players outside of the designated FIFA international windows. The situation is particularly sensitive given that AIFF vice-president NA Haris attended the official draw ceremony, where he provided assurances regarding India’s participation. During that event, India was placed in Group B alongside the Maldives and Pakistan, with their opening match scheduled for November 5. The potential withdrawal of the defending champions, combined with the ongoing uncertainty regarding Nepal’s participation due to a FIFA suspension, leaves the tournament structure in a state of flux, with organisers now facing the prospect of a reduced field of teams.
