Everton Climb to Seventh After Narrow Victory at Newcastle

Everton climbed to seventh place in the Premier League table on Monday night, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. The result further intensified the pressure on Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, whose side has now suffered four defeats in their last five matches across all competitions.

The decisive moment arrived four minutes into the second half when Thierno Barry tapped home the only goal of the game. The opportunity was created by Tyrique George, whose initial effort was parried by Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek directly into the path of the waiting forward. Despite a lengthy VAR review for a potential offside, the goal was upheld, marking Barry’s eighth goal of the season and his fourth in his last six appearances.

Newcastle’s Struggles Continue Under Jaissle

For Newcastle, the evening was defined by frustration and a lack of attacking cohesion. The home side struggled to find a rhythm throughout a scrappy first half, and their difficulties were compounded by a late red card for midfielder Jacob Ramsey, who was dismissed in the final seconds for a challenge on Harrison Armstrong. The defeat leaves the Magpies languishing in 13th place, with supporters expressing their dissatisfaction with boos at both half-time and the final whistle.

Jaissle, who took charge following the departure of Eddie Howe, has struggled to find consistency in his debut season on Tyneside. The team’s inability to threaten the Everton goal was evident until the final stages, with their first shot on target not arriving until the 86th minute through Yoane Wissa. Although Wissa forced a late save from Jordan Pickford in stoppage time, Newcastle were unable to find an equaliser, with Fabian Schar missing a clear opportunity and Anthony Elanga seeing a close-range effort clip the post.

Everton Find Form on the Road

The victory provides a significant boost for Everton, who bounced back from consecutive league defeats against Arsenal and Chelsea. This result also marked their second win over Newcastle in less than a week, following a 3-1 victory in the League Cup fourth round last Thursday. Notably, this was Everton’s first away league win since February 28, a victory that also occurred at St James’ Park.

Everton managed the win despite the continued absence of Jack Grealish. The winger was left out of the squad for the second consecutive match following reports of a breach of club discipline. While the club officially stated the player was not match fit, the team demonstrated their ability to secure results without him. For Newcastle, the focus now shifts to a critical upcoming fixture against Fulham, where Jaissle will be under immense pressure to secure a positive result to alleviate the mounting scrutiny surrounding his position.
