Injury-hit Pacers down to just six players for Hawks clash

The Indiana Pacers faced an unprecedented personnel challenge on Monday night, entering their matchup against the Atlanta Hawks with a severely depleted roster. With 11 players sidelined due to various injuries, illnesses, and rest protocols, head coach Rick Carlisle was left with only six active players available for the contest.

The situation represents a significant hurdle for the franchise, as the sidelined group accounts for approximately 93% of the team's total payroll. The unavailability of so many key contributors forced the Pacers to rely on a rotation consisting of a starting five and a single substitute, a scenario rarely seen during the early stages of an NBA season.

A roster stretched to the limit

The crisis reached a breaking point shortly before tip-off when Kelly Oubre Jr. was ruled out due to a bruised knee, reducing the available pool from seven players to six. This development marked the first time since 2004 that the Pacers have utilized such a limited roster in a single game. While other teams have occasionally fielded six-man rotations in the past, such instances typically occur during late-season games with little consequence, rather than in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Coach Rick Carlisle described the circumstances as a perfect storm of misfortune. The list of unavailable players included Tyrese Haliburton (hamstring), Pascal Siakam (rest), Johnny Furphy (knee), T.J. McConnell (hamstring), Larry Nance Jr. (illness), Andrew Nembhard (cervical), Aaron Nesmith (hamstring), Ben Sheppard (knee), Obi Toppin (lumbar sprain), and Ivica Zubac (ankle). The team’s financial breakdown for the night was stark, with roughly $193 million in salary sitting on the sidelines compared to just $15 million in active salary on the court.

Opportunity for the remaining core

With the roster thinned, Jarace Walker stood out as the only player in the active lineup earning more than $3 million this season. The remaining available group featured Jay Huff, Quenton Jackson, and three players on two-way contracts: Braden Smith, Jalen Slawson, and Kobe Brown. Braden Smith was handed the first start of his NBA career, joining Walker, Slawson, Huff, and Jackson in the starting lineup, while Brown served as the team's lone reserve.

Despite the logistical difficulties, Carlisle emphasized the unique chance for the available players to prove themselves. The Pacers are now looking toward their next fixture against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. With the entire NBA observing a break on Tuesday for Election Day, and additional time off scheduled for Thursday and Friday, the team hopes to use the upcoming window to manage their injury concerns and return to a more standard rotation.
