According to the Times of India, Fernandes expressed discomfort with Bajaj's managerial style, fearing that their differing approaches could disrupt team dynamics. Nevertheless, the AIFF has since clarified that the roles and responsibilities of both the head coach and the manager are now explicitly outlined in their contracts, significantly minimizing the risk of conflict.
Clear Roles Established
A senior official from the AIFF emphasized that the head coach will have full authority over coaching and player selection, ensuring that there will be no interference from the managerial side. "The coaching and selection will be done entirely by the coach," the official stated. "The manager's role has also been defined. It's a typical manager's position, like at the club, an administrative role."
Fernandes has established himself as a leading figure in Indian youth football, having guided the national team to three consecutive AFC U-16/17 Asian Cups from 2018 to 2023. His tenure includes a notable victory against Iran, a powerhouse in Asian football, which secured the team's qualification for this year's tournament.
Bajaj's Ambitions and Achievements
Despite his recent achievements, including leading Minerva Academy's Under-12 boys to victory in the Gothia Cup and the Helsinki Cup, Bajaj's aspirations for a more prominent role with the Under-15 team appear to be thwarted. He had previously requested to take sole charge of the team for the World Cup, but his responsibilities have been limited to administrative functions.
Bajaj has also presented a strategic plan to the AIFF technical committee, outlining his vision to elevate India's senior team to the 2034 FIFA World Cup. However, given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that he will accept the managerial position offered to him.
