"There was a reason he was not allowed to play. Performance was not the reason. There was no reason. He made runs against New Zealand and was in form," Kaif stated, highlighting Sarfaraz's capabilities. He commended the decision-makers for reinstating Sarfaraz, asserting that his skills could be crucial for India's success in Sri Lanka.
Kaif Advocates for Sarfaraz's Selection
Kaif's endorsement raises the question of whether Sarfaraz can secure a spot in the starting XI. He believes that Sarfaraz should be included, although he acknowledged that the team management might lean towards Jurel due to his prior involvement with the squad. "If they follow the trend of backing players who have already been part of the team, they might opt for Jurel, despite his inconsistent performance," Kaif noted.
However, Kaif firmly places Sarfaraz in his ideal lineup, citing his exceptional record against spin as a key factor. "Sarfaraz’s name comes into my best XI because of his ability to play spin at No. 5 or No. 6," he added. Kaif also pointed out Sarfaraz's diverse range of shots, which could prove advantageous as the match progresses and batting conditions become more challenging.
Selection Dilemma Ahead of the First Test
Kaif further emphasized that Jurel's recent form could work against him, making a strong case for Sarfaraz's inclusion. "Jurel’s recent Test record hasn’t been that great," he remarked, suggesting that the selection of the No. 6 spot will be a significant talking point as the first Test approaches.
Sarfaraz has played six Tests, accumulating 371 runs at an average of 37.10, which includes one century and three half-centuries, with his most notable performance being a score of 150 against New Zealand. The Indian team is set to kick off the two-Test series in Galle on August 15, followed by the second Test in Colombo starting August 23. The decision regarding the No. 6 position is anticipated to be closely scrutinized as the team prepares for the opening match.
