NEW DELHI: T Dilip, the former fielding coach of the Indian cricket team, has shared insights into the remarkable qualities that set Virat Kohli apart on the cricket field. During his five-year tenure with the team, Dilip observed that Kohli's unwavering intensity not only distinguished him as a player but also inspired his teammates to elevate their performance levels.

Dilip emphasized that Kohli's approach to the game remains consistent, whether in practice or during matches. "When it comes to Virat Kohli, intensity is non-negotiable," he stated in a video released by Star Sports. He noted Kohli's exceptional reflexes and commitment during power plays, where he is often seen making crucial stops and diving to save runs. "Even in the last series, he was consistently putting in those dives and being sharp on the field," Dilip remarked.

What particularly impressed Dilip was Kohli's proactive nature, even when the ball was not directed at him. "It's not just about the actions he takes when the ball comes his way; it's also about his readiness to run towards the non-striker's end to retrieve the throw and return it to the wicketkeeper," he explained. This level of engagement, according to Dilip, showcases Kohli's dedication to the team's success.

Even as Kohli progresses in his career, he continues to take on challenging fielding positions, demonstrating his commitment to the game. "He is often the first to run out to long-on during the final overs, which is a remarkable display of teamwork," Dilip added.

Reflecting on his time with the team, Dilip cited India's triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados as his most treasured memory. "The silence before the victory was palpable, and in that moment, I could feel the hard work the players had invested over the years," he recalled. Additionally, he expressed pride in the introduction of a fielding medal ceremony during the 2023 ODI World Cup, which aimed to recognize all contributions in the field, not just spectacular catches.

This initiative fostered a culture of teamwork, encouraging players to appreciate each other's efforts. "The fielding medal became a team award, and players began to celebrate the small contributions made by their teammates," Dilip noted. His tenure coincided with a highly successful period for Indian cricket, including victories in multiple T20 World Cups and the Champions Trophy.

Having joined the national setup in November 2021, Dilip's contract was not renewed following India's T20I tour of Zimbabwe, with Subhadeep Ghosh taking over as fielding coach. His contributions, however, have left a lasting impact on the team's approach to fielding and overall performance.
