Barcelona Reclaim La Liga Lead With Dominant 6-1 Victory Over Alaves

Barcelona responded to a challenging week in emphatic fashion on Saturday, dismantling Alaves 6-1 at Camp Nou to reclaim top spot in La Liga. Hansi Flick’s side entered the match looking to recover from a Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and a recent Clasico loss to Real Madrid, and they wasted little time in reasserting their authority.

The victory moves the reigning champions two points clear of Atletico Madrid, who had briefly occupied the summit earlier in the day following a 2-0 win against Levante. Despite a defensive injury crisis that saw Frenkie de Jong deployed at centre-back and a first start for youngster Brian Farinas, Barcelona’s attacking unit proved far too potent for the visitors.

A Clinical Display of Attacking Football

Raphinha set the tone early, opening the scoring in the eighth minute after being set up by Fermin Lopez. The Brazilian forward, currently the league’s top scorer, later added his 15th goal of the campaign with a clinical finish across goalkeeper Antonio Sivera. Lopez also found the net, doubling the lead in the 23rd minute with a strike from a tight angle that found the far post.

Lamine Yamal was equally influential, netting twice during the contest. The teenage winger struck just before the interval with a low drive from the edge of the box and added his second midway through the second half with a composed finish over the keeper. Substitute Anthony Gordon rounded off the scoring for the hosts with a sixth goal, while Mariano Diaz provided a late consolation for Alaves.

Atletico Madrid Maintain Pressure

Earlier in the day, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid extended their winning streak to seven league matches with a 2-0 victory at Levante. Goals from Alejandro Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone, both assisted by Alex Baena, secured the result. The win marked a significant milestone for the coach, as it was his 344th La Liga victory with the club, equalling the record previously set by Luis Aragones.

Following the win, Flick praised his squad's reaction to their recent setbacks, noting the high level of performance from his attacking players. Barcelona now turn their attention to a Champions League fixture against Aston Villa on Tuesday, followed by a crucial top-of-the-table clash against Atletico Madrid next Sunday. Meanwhile, Alaves remain in 10th place, extending their winless run to seven matches.
