Chargers place Derwin James Jr. on injured reserve following hamstring setback

The Los Angeles Chargers have officially placed star safety Derwin James Jr. on injured reserve, sidelining the Pro Bowl defensive back for at least the next four games. The decision follows a recent setback in James' recovery from a hamstring injury that has kept him out of action since the team's loss to Buffalo on September 27.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh had previously indicated earlier this week that the safety's rehabilitation process had hit a hurdle, making the move to injured reserve a likely outcome. James, a key component of the Chargers' secondary, will now be forced to miss a significant stretch of the season as he focuses on his recovery.

Roster adjustments and injury updates

In response to the vacancy created by James' move to the injured reserve list, the Chargers have made several adjustments to their active roster. The team signed cornerback Isas Waxter, who previously spent time on the practice squad and appeared in two games this season as a standard elevation. Additionally, cornerback Kaiir Elam has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster, bringing experience from his previous stints with Buffalo, Dallas, and Tennessee, where he started 19 of his 43 career regular-season appearances.

The team's injury report remains extensive as they prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. Left guard Kayode Awosika is set to miss his fifth consecutive game due to a lingering leg injury. Furthermore, the Chargers have ruled out defensive back Deane Leonard, who is dealing with a concussion, and wide receiver Brenen Thompson, who is sidelined with quad and hamstring issues. The Chargers currently hold a 0-6 record as they navigate these personnel challenges.
