Yuzvendra Chahal reveals Rohit Sharma’s reasoning for 2023 World Cup omission

Yuzvendra Chahal has shed light on the tactical considerations that led to his exclusion from India’s 2023 ODI World Cup squad. Despite his status as one of the country's most prolific white-ball spinners, the leg-spinner was left out of the 15-member group for the home tournament, a decision that marked a significant shift in his international career trajectory.

Speaking in a recent interview with former India opener Aakash Chopra, Chahal revealed that he received direct communication from then-captain Rohit Sharma regarding the team's selection philosophy. The management’s primary objective at the time was to bolster the side's batting depth, specifically looking for contributions down to the number eight position, while also maintaining the flexibility to field an additional fast bowler.

Tactical shifts and selection clarity

Chahal explained that the conversation with Sharma provided him with the necessary context to understand why he did not fit into the specific team balance required for the 2023 campaign. According to the spinner, the captain was transparent about the team's requirements, which ultimately left little room for his inclusion. Following that tournament, Chahal noted that he moved past the disappointment of being left out, choosing to focus on his domestic and league commitments instead.

The veteran spinner also reflected on his experience during the 2024 T20 World Cup. Although he was selected for the squad following a strong performance in the 2024 IPL, he did not feature in any matches during the tournament. Chahal admitted that he approached the 2024 IPL season with a mindset of enjoyment rather than pressure, which caught the attention of Sharma, who had expressed a desire to include him in the setup.

When comparing his various tournament snubs, Chahal identified his total omission from the 2021 squad as the most difficult to process. In contrast, he found the 2022 experience more manageable because he was part of the team and had received clear communication from the leadership regarding the conditions under which he might be selected. Chahal, who made his T20I debut in 2016, remains a formidable figure in the IPL, where he holds the record as the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 233 scalps in 188 matches.
