WPL 2027 Mini-Auction: Kochi Set to Host Bidding War for 27 Squad Spots

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is set for a pivotal moment ahead of its fifth edition, with the 2027 mini-auction scheduled to take place in Kochi this Wednesday. Five franchises will gather to refine their squads, with 27 roster spots currently up for grabs from a pool of 146 registered players. Of these available positions, 20 are specifically earmarked for domestic Indian talent.

The auction proceedings are slated to commence at 5:30 PM IST. Fans looking to follow the action live can tune into the Star Sports Network for television coverage, while digital streaming will be provided via JioHotstar. As teams prepare to finalize their lineups, the event marks a critical juncture for the league, which is scheduled to run from January 14 to February 7, 2027.

Franchise Strategies and Purse Dynamics

Heading into the auction, the five teams find themselves in varying financial positions. The UP Warriorz enter the room with the most significant work to do, holding eight available slots and a remaining purse of Rs 3.75 crore. In contrast, the Mumbai Indians hold the smallest budget, with Rs 90 lakh left to spend. Other franchises also face specific constraints, with the Gujarat Giants holding Rs 1.25 crore, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) with Rs 1.15 crore, and the Delhi Capitals possessing Rs 1.10 crore.

Following a successful 2026 campaign, defending champions RCB, along with Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants, are expected to prioritize targeted additions rather than wholesale changes, having retained the majority of their core squads. RCB, in particular, will look to bolster their Indian backup options while continuing to feature Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry. As the tournament approaches, both RCB and Mumbai Indians will be looking to add to their previous title successes, while the Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriorz remain in pursuit of their first championship trophy.

Players to Watch in the Auction Pool

A diverse group of cricketers is expected to draw significant interest during the bidding process. The list of notable names includes India wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini, all-rounder Sneh Rana, and middle-order batter Tejal Hasabnis. International stars, including England’s Sophia Dunkley and Australian duo Sophie Molineux and Grace Harris, are also among those in the mix.

Interest is also expected to surround emerging talent, most notably 16-year-old Mumbai batter Ira Jadhav. Jadhav gained significant attention last year after a standout performance in the Women’s Under-19 One-Day tournament, where she recorded a remarkable 346 runs off 157 balls against Meghalaya. With the auction set to conclude the final preparations for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on how franchises balance their remaining budgets to secure the talent needed for the 2027 campaign.
