Fleetwood Stun Arsenal in Dramatic League Cup Penalty Shootout

Arsenal suffered a shock exit from the League Cup on Tuesday night, falling to a dramatic 5-3 penalty shootout defeat against fourth-tier side Fleetwood. Despite entering the match in strong form, Mikel Arteta’s side were held to a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes before being eliminated in a contest that saw the Premier League leaders struggle to overcome their lower-league opponents.

The match, held at Fleetwood’s Highbury stadium, saw the hosts take a surprise lead in the 21st minute through Aaron Loupalo-Bi, who capitalized on a defensive lapse involving teenager Marli Salmon. Although Viktor Gyokeres leveled the scoring shortly after the interval by converting a delivery from debutant Ceadach O’Neill, Arsenal were unable to find a winner. The visitors' evening took a further turn for the worse in the 85th minute when 16-year-old Max Dowman was dismissed for violent conduct following an altercation with Harrison Neal.

Penalty Heartbreak for Gunners

The decisive moment arrived during the penalty shootout. With both sides successfully converting their first three spot-kicks, Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch produced a crucial save to deny Bruno Guimaraes. This opening allowed Conor Haughey to step up and slot home the winning penalty, securing a famous victory for the League Two side and sparking jubilant scenes among the home supporters.

Arteta had opted to rotate his squad heavily for the fixture, making nine changes to the starting lineup that defeated Everton 2-0 on Saturday. With a significant Premier League clash against Liverpool on the horizon, only Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gyokeres retained their spots. The experimental side included several young talents, such as debutant O’Neill and starters Dowman and Salmon, but they ultimately failed to navigate the challenging conditions on a windy night by the Irish Sea.

The defeat marks a notable setback for Arsenal, who had won 11 of their previous 13 matches across all competitions. While the club has faced cup disappointments against lower-division opposition in the past—including losses to Bradford, Southampton, Nottingham Forest, and Wrexham—this result against the 18th-placed League Two side stands as a significant upset. For Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor, the victory represents a landmark achievement, as his team overcame an eight-minute delay caused by a drone to eliminate the top-flight leaders.
