The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association has introduced a split captaincy and coaching structure for the upcoming domestic season, appointing separate leaders and mentors for red-ball and white-ball formats to improve team performance.

Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association Implements Split Captaincy and Coaching Model

In a significant strategic shift, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has announced the implementation of a split captaincy and coaching model for the forthcoming domestic season. This structural change aims to address the unique requirements of different formats by assigning dedicated leadership and coaching personnel to the red-ball and white-ball squads.

The initiative, proposed by the chairman of the senior men's cricket selection committee, Praveen Kumar, is designed to sharpen the team's focus and elevate overall performance across all domestic competitions. By bifurcating the responsibilities, the association hopes to better manage the distinct tactical and technical demands of the Ranji Trophy compared to the shorter formats.

Leadership and Coaching Appointments

Under the new arrangement, wicketkeeper-batter Aryan Juyal has been entrusted with the captaincy for the Ranji Trophy campaign. He will work alongside veteran former India spinner Gyanendra Pandey, who has been appointed as the coach for the red-ball side. This pairing is expected to bring stability and experience to the longer format of the game.

For the white-ball circuit, which includes the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Karan Sharma will take on the captaincy duties. The coaching responsibilities for these limited-overs teams will be shared by former India speedster Sudip Tyagi and Arvind Kapoor. This division of labor marks a departure from traditional management styles within the state association.

Squad News and Player Returns

The squad announcements have also highlighted several notable inclusions and returns. Yash Dayal is set to make his comeback to the Uttar Pradesh Ranji Trophy setup, marking his return to competitive cricket. Additionally, Kartik Tyagi has been named in the squad following his involvement with the Indian T20I team at the Asian Games.

The selection committee has also rewarded domestic form with a maiden first-class call-up for Abhinandan Singh, who recently made his Indian Premier League debut for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Furthermore, leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari has earned a recall to the red-ball side. Ansari, who last played a Ranji Trophy match in 2020, recently returned to first-class cricket during the tour against Sri Lanka A at Galle earlier this year.

Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to begin its 2026-27 Ranji Trophy campaign on October 11. The team will face Bihar in their season opener, which is set to be hosted at the Rajgir International Stadium.
