Both India and the West Indies have been sanctioned by the ICC for failing to meet minimum over-rate requirements during the third ODI in New Chandigarh, despite a record-breaking chase by the visitors.

India and West Indies Hit With Fines for Slow Over-Rates Following Final ODI

India and the West Indies have both received financial penalties following the conclusion of their three-match ODI series in New Chandigarh. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that both sides were found guilty of maintaining slow over-rates during the final encounter on Saturday.

After accounting for time allowances, India were ruled to be four overs short of the required rate, while the West Indies were found to be two overs behind. Consequently, the Indian squad was fined 20 per cent of their match fee, with the West Indies players receiving a 10 per cent fine for the infraction.

ICC Sanctions and Match Official Details

The penalties were issued in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which stipulates that players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time. Both captains accepted the proposed sanctions, negating the need for a formal hearing.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, alongside third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Virender Sharma. The sanctions were officially imposed by Prakash Bhatt, a member of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees.

West Indies Secure Historic Chase in Series Finale

While the disciplinary action marked a sour end to the series for both teams, the final match itself was defined by a remarkable performance from the West Indies. Despite having already conceded the series 2-0, the visitors finished on a high note by successfully chasing down a target of 352.

The victory was anchored by an unbeaten 162 from captain Shai Hope, marking the highest successful run chase in the history of West Indies ODI cricket. This performance eclipsed their previous record of 331/5, set against Ireland in 2019. Furthermore, Hope’s innings established him as the first wicketkeeper-captain to score more than 150 runs in an ODI, while also surpassing Brian Lara’s 153 against Pakistan in 1993 as the highest score by a West Indies men's batter in a successful ODI chase.

With the ODI portion of the tour concluded, both teams are now set to turn their attention to a five-match T20I series, which is scheduled to commence on Tuesday.
