Joe Burrow remains optimistic as Bengals slip to .500 after loss to Jaguars

The Cincinnati Bengals find themselves back at the .500 mark following a frustrating 22-17 home defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite the loss—their second in as many weeks—quarterback Joe Burrow remains steadfast in his belief that the team is well-positioned for the remainder of the season. The mood in the locker room following the game was defined by a sense of urgency, with head coach Zac Taylor delivering a lengthy, impassioned message to his squad regarding the challenges ahead.

The defeat leaves Cincinnati at 2-2 after four weeks, mirroring their start from the previous season. While the team opened the campaign with two consecutive victories, the recent slide has intensified the pressure on the franchise to maintain momentum and secure a postseason berth. Addressing the media after the game, Burrow dismissed the idea that the team is in a state of crisis, emphasizing that the locker room remains confident despite the recent setbacks.

A late rally falls short

The Bengals faced a 22-10 deficit with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before mounting a desperate comeback attempt. After scoring a touchdown and forcing a defensive stop, Cincinnati marched deep into Jacksonville territory. However, the drive stalled at the 12-yard line when running back Chase Brown was stopped just one yard short of the first-down marker on a fourth-down play, effectively ending the team's hopes of a victory.

Defensive struggles were a recurring theme throughout the afternoon. According to Next Gen Stats, the Bengals missed 12 tackles compared to Jacksonville's six, and the Jaguars managed 143 yards after the catch. Linebacker Barrett Carter noted that the defense failed to contain checkdown passes on critical downs, allowing the Jaguars to extend drives. Offensively, the team struggled to establish a ground game, managing only 23 yards on 15 carries, which forced Burrow into 58 dropbacks—the fourth-highest total of his career.

Burrow addresses turnover concerns

A significant point of discussion following the loss was Burrow's performance in high-leverage situations. The quarterback threw a costly interception deep in Jacksonville territory during the fourth quarter, failing to spot linebacker Foyesade Oluokun in zone coverage. Statistically, Burrow has recorded the most fourth-quarter or overtime turnovers in the NFL since the beginning of the 2024 season.

Despite the miscues, coach Zac Taylor offered full support for his quarterback, stating he would continue to trust Burrow in any situation. For his part, the signal-caller remains focused on the long-term outlook of the season. While acknowledging the need for improvement, Burrow maintained that the team's early-season highs were not a fluke and that there is plenty of time to correct their course. As he noted, championships are not decided in the first month of the season.
