Shai Hope Joins Elite Company with Century Against India in Ranchi

West Indies captain Shai Hope etched his name into the record books on Friday, becoming only the second player in international cricket history to register centuries in all three formats against India. The skipper’s blistering performance in the second T20I in Ranchi proved decisive, as he steered his side to a commanding six-wicket victory.

Hope’s unbeaten 102, struck from just 45 deliveries, was the cornerstone of a successful pursuit of a 250-run target. The West Indies reached their objective in 18.3 overs, losing only four wickets in the process. This result stands as the highest successful T20I run chase in West Indies history and the largest successful chase by any international side against India in the shortest format.

A Rare Statistical Milestone

By reaching triple figures in the T20I arena, Hope completed a unique set of achievements against the Indian team. Having previously recorded one Test century and five ODI centuries against the same opposition, the captain now possesses a hundred in every format against them. He joins former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as the only other player to accomplish this specific feat.

While other notable batters, such as England’s Jos Buttler and Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, have successfully scored centuries against India in both Tests and T20Is, neither has managed to replicate that success in the ODI format. Hope’s accomplishment highlights his consistent ability to adapt his game across the international spectrum.

Impact on the Series

The victory in Ranchi carries significant weight for the West Indies, as it levels the five-match T20I series at 1-1. Hope’s innings also places him in an exclusive group of West Indies players to have reached a T20I century against India, joining Evin Lewis, who remains the only other player from his nation to achieve the feat, having done so twice.

The captain’s ability to anchor and accelerate the innings was the primary factor in overcoming the daunting 250-run target. With the series now tied, the performance serves as a major momentum shift for the West Indies as they look toward the remainder of the contest.
