The board’s decision to drop seven players and introduce a host of fresh faces has sparked intense debate among former players, analysts, and supporters. Despite the backlash, Naqvi remains resolute, maintaining that the strategic shift was necessary to address the team's poor form. He dismissed the criticism surrounding his leadership, challenging detractors to compare the current state of the team with the rankings that existed prior to his tenure.
Restructuring the Squad and Coaching Staff
The scale of the changes is substantial, with seven players released from the squad following the second Test defeat. The list of those omitted includes Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Agha, Ali Usman, Aamer Jamal, Awais Zafar, and Khurram Shahzad. In their place, the selectors have opted for a youthful approach, drafting in five uncapped players: Arafat Minhas, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Saad Baig, Mohammad Imran Randhawa, and Razaullah. They are joined by Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who bring a combined total of only 10 matches of international experience to the side.
Beyond the playing personnel, the PCB has also overhauled the coaching structure. Mike Hesson has been appointed as head coach, with Ashley Noffke taking over as the bowling coach. Both individuals were already integrated into the Pakistan white-ball coaching setup. Consequently, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Umar Gul have been released from their previous coaching responsibilities. Naqvi noted that while he is currently focused on addressing the team's performance, he is also looking into broader systemic issues within the organization, though he stated that now is not the appropriate time to discuss matters unrelated to the sport.
