In a tense moment during the first Test match between India and Sri Lanka in Galle, Nishan Madushka was struck on the helmet by a sweep shot from KL Rahul. The incident occurred on the last ball of Prabath Jayasuriya's over, as Rahul executed a well-timed sweep while Madushka was positioned at short leg. Despite Madushka's quick reaction to lower his head, the ball made direct contact with his helmet.

Following the impact, the ball deflected towards fine leg, and although Rahul hesitated to take a run, he was compelled to complete it as Yashasvi Jaiswal had already crossed. Immediately after finishing the run, Rahul rushed to check on Madushka's condition. Medical staff attended to the Sri Lankan batter, conducting concussion assessments before he was escorted off the field, removing his shin pads as he departed.

This match marks a significant milestone for India, as it is their 600th Test, coinciding with the celebration of the country's 80th Independence Day. The Galle International Stadium is also commemorating its 50th Test match. India’s captain, Shubman Gill, won the toss and opted to bat first, with both teams vying for crucial points in the World Test Championship standings. Currently, India sits in fifth place, while Sri Lanka is in sixth.

Devdutt Padikkal has stepped in for Sai Sudharsan, who is sidelined due to a stress fracture, while Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable due to a knee injury.
