New Zealand fast bowler Will O'Rourke sidelined for India series to prioritize Australia tour

New Zealand fast bowler Will O'Rourke has been officially ruled out of the upcoming home series against India as he continues his recovery from persistent hamstring and calf injuries. The 25-year-old, who was expected to play a significant role in the upcoming fixtures, will sit out the entire tour to ensure he is fully prepared for the team's high-stakes four-Test series in Australia this December.

The decision to exclude O'Rourke comes after a period of medical assessment and consultation between the player, coaching staff, and medical team. New Zealand is scheduled to host India for a comprehensive series featuring five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests, with the opening T20I set to take place in Christchurch on October 22.

Prioritizing long-term fitness for Australia tour

O'Rourke’s absence is a blow to New Zealand's bowling depth, particularly given his recent return to the international fold following a seven-month layoff caused by a back stress fracture. His current injury setbacks occurred during the third Test against England, where he sustained a hamstring injury, followed by a calf strain during a training session in late August.

New Zealand coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment regarding the setback but emphasized that the conservative approach is necessary. Walter noted that while O'Rourke was initially slated to feature in both the ODI and Test legs of the India series, the collective decision was made to prioritize his long-term rehabilitation and the safe management of his bowling loads.

The team is looking ahead to a demanding schedule where their pace bowling resources will be tested. By opting for a cautious return-to-play timeline, management hopes to have the quick available for the opening Test against Australia in Perth on December 9. If his recovery progresses as anticipated, O'Rourke is expected to return to competitive action for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield domestic competition in late December.

The announcement follows news earlier on Friday that Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes will also be unavailable for the T20I series against India due to their own injury concerns.
