Namibia secure T20I tri-series opening win over South Africa

Namibia secured a notable victory in the opening match of the 2026 T20I Tri-Series, defeating South Africa by 18 runs at the Namibia Cricket Ground on Friday. The result marks Namibia's second win over the Proteas in the last 10 months, reinforcing their competitive standing in the shortest format of the game.

After being sent in to bat, the hosts posted a total of 163/9. Although South Africa’s bowling attack staged a late recovery to restrict the scoring, Namibia’s disciplined performance with the ball proved decisive in defending their target.

At 133/3 in the 15th over, Namibia looked poised to set a target well beyond 180. However, the South African bowlers tightened their lines significantly in the final five overs, claiming six wickets for just 30 runs. Prenelan Subrayen was instrumental in the turnaround, finishing with figures of 3/32, while captain Bjorn Fortuin maintained pressure throughout his spell to return 2/17.

Dewald Brevis provided the primary resistance for the Proteas, anchoring the chase with a counter-attacking 75 off 50 balls. His innings included five sixes and kept South Africa in contention despite a lack of support from the rest of the batting line-up. The momentum shifted decisively in the 18th over when Brevis was dismissed.

Duan Jansen attempted to keep the chase alive with a late cameo of 25 from 17 balls, but the required run rate proved too steep as wickets continued to fall. South Africa ultimately concluded their 20 overs on 145/9, falling 18 runs short of the target to hand Namibia an opening win in the tri-series.
