Mohammad Kaif criticises India’s selection policy regarding Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has voiced his disapproval regarding the team management's decision to drop Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the fourth T20I against New Zealand. Despite India holding an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, the young talent was omitted from the playing XI to accommodate the returning Ishan Kishan, a move Kaif believes hindered the development of a potential future star.

Sooryavanshi had been drafted into the side for the second and third matches following an injury to Kishan. During his brief stint, he displayed significant promise, most notably in the third T20I where he partnered with Abhishek Sharma to accumulate 100 runs in just six overs. Kaif argued that consistent selection is vital for a young player's confidence and that the fourth match presented the perfect environment to continue his integration into the squad.

Questioning the selection strategy

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif highlighted the inconsistency in how the team handles emerging players. He drew comparisons to the management's approach with other prospects like Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav, suggesting that Sooryavanshi deserved similar backing. According to Kaif, the fact that the series outcome was already secured made the decision to bench the youngster particularly difficult to justify.

The former cricketer also questioned the necessity of rushing Ishan Kishan back into the side immediately after his recovery. Kaif noted that Kishan’s return to wicketkeeping duties raised concerns about his physical condition, suggesting that if the player was not fully fit, he should have been rested rather than forced into a match that was not a must-win scenario. He posited that the team could have prioritised long-term player development over the immediate return of a recovering veteran.

Looking ahead to the series finale

Following a heavy 87-run defeat in the fourth T20I at Auckland, India’s leadership may be forced to reconsider their lineup for the final match at Seddon Park. With the series currently standing at 3-1, there is speculation that further changes could be made to the team structure.

Sanju Samson, who has struggled for form since his 67-run knock in the opening match at Christchurch, has recorded scores of 14, 18, and four in his subsequent innings. This dip in performance has led to suggestions that Sooryavanshi could be recalled for the final encounter. As India aims to conclude the series on a high note, the focus remains on whether the management will opt to provide the youngster with another opportunity to showcase his capabilities on the international stage.
