New Zealand captain
By taking the field in Hamilton, the 34-year-old moved past fellow spinner Ish Sodhi, who previously held the record with 142 appearances. Santner, who made his international T20 debut in 2015, has now cemented his place at the top of New Zealand's all-time appearance list after more than a decade of service to the national team.
A Decade of Consistency at the International Level
The updated rankings for New Zealand's most-capped T20I players highlight the longevity of the current skipper. Following Santner's 143 matches and Sodhi's 142, former fast bowler Tim Southee sits in third place with 126 caps. The list is rounded out by former opening batter Martin Guptill, who appeared 122 times, and Daryl Mitchell, who has reached 109 T20I appearances.
Throughout his career, the captain has proven to be a reliable contributor in both departments. Across his 143 matches, he has accumulated 1,117 runs at an average of 20.30, with a career-best score of 77 not out. His impact with the ball has been equally notable, having claimed 151 wickets at an average of 23.09, with personal best figures of 4/11.
Recent Milestones and Performance in Hamilton
This appearance record follows another major achievement for the New Zealand leader. During the fourth T20I against India on Friday, Santner became only the third New Zealand bowler to reach the 150-wicket mark in men's T20Is. In that match, he returned figures of 2/24, dismissing Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy to reach the milestone.
However, his landmark 143rd appearance in Hamilton proved to be a challenging outing. During his four-over spell against the Indian batting lineup, the spinner went wicketless, conceding 39 runs. Despite the result in the final match, the occasion marked a significant personal achievement for the long-serving international cricketer as he continues to lead the Black Caps.
