Gautam Gambhir Defends Selection Policy Amid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Debate

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has firmly defended his selection philosophy, stating that his primary responsibility is to make the right decisions for the national side rather than seeking public approval. The comments come amidst ongoing discussions regarding the inclusion of teenage prospect Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who remains on the sidelines despite his performances.

While the depth of India's squad has sparked debate over potential rotations, Gambhir remains committed to supporting players who have demonstrated long-term consistency. Currently, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma continue to open the batting, having played pivotal roles in India's successful T20I World Cup title defense earlier this year.

Prioritizing Team Stability and Performance

Speaking to broadcasters ahead of the fifth T20I against New Zealand, Gambhir clarified that his approach is rooted in providing a sense of security within the dressing room. He noted that while the talent pool is deep, those who have delivered over an extended period are entitled to a longer run in the side.

The head coach acknowledged that while popular opinion might favor immediate changes, his role requires a more calculated perspective. By backing established performers, he aims to foster an environment where players feel secure in their positions, which he believes is essential for sustained success at the international level.

Maintaining Intensity in International Cricket

Addressing concerns about motivation following India's series victory against New Zealand—having secured the first three matches—Gambhir dismissed the notion of dead rubbers. He emphasized that representing the country provides sufficient motivation for any player, regardless of the series status.

Gambhir also praised his squad for their rapid adaptation to New Zealand conditions following a demanding schedule that included home series against Afghanistan and the West Indies, as well as the Asian Games. Despite the short turnaround, he credited the players for their ability to adjust quickly to a challenging environment, noting that for many in the squad, this tour marks their first experience playing in New Zealand.
