This achievement places Suthar in an elite group of cricketers, with only one other Indian, Mohammad Nisar, having accomplished this feat before him. Nisar made his Test debut against England at Lord's on June 25, 1932, where he recorded figures of 5 for 93. He later achieved a five-wicket haul in his first home Test against England in Mumbai on December 15, 1933, with figures of 5 for 90. For 94 years, no other Indian had matched this remarkable record until Suthar's recent success.
In addition to this milestone, Suthar's performance in Galle places him alongside two of India's most celebrated spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh. By taking six wickets in the second innings, he became only the third Indian to achieve a six-wicket haul in a Test innings in Sri Lanka. His final match figures of 10 for 131 from 54.2 overs not only secured a victory for India but also broke Harbhajan's previous record for the best bowling figures by an Indian in Sri Lanka, which stood at 10 for 153 from a Test in Galle in 2008.
A Bright Future Ahead
At just 24 years old, Suthar has already etched his name in the annals of cricket history, becoming the youngest Indian to claim a 10-wicket haul in a Test match. He joins the ranks of Harbhajan and Ashwin as one of the few Indians to achieve this feat in Sri Lanka. However, the record for the best match figures by a visiting bowler in Sri Lanka remains with South Africa's Keshav Maharaj, who took 12 for 283 in a Test against Sri Lanka in July 2018.
