Manav Suthar and Devdutt Padikkal emerge as strong candidates for India's future Test cricket lineup.

India's emphatic triumph over Sri Lanka in the opening Test match at Galle has highlighted the emergence of two promising talents: left-arm spinner Manav Suthar and batsman Devdutt Padikkal. Both players showcased their potential, suggesting they could be key figures for the team in the future.

Manav Suthar, at just 24 years old, has made a remarkable impact in his brief Test career, claiming 17 wickets in only two matches at an impressive average of 11.35. His performance in Galle was particularly noteworthy, as he achieved his first ten-wicket match haul, including two five-wicket hauls. Suthar demonstrated the classic attributes of a successful left-arm spinner, effectively utilizing loop, drift, turn, and bounce to trouble the Sri Lankan batsmen.

From his very first delivery, Suthar made his presence felt by dismissing Dinesh Chandimal with a delivery that pitched, turned, and edged to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. On the final day of the match, he skillfully dismantled the Sri Lankan tail, employing variations in pace and a well-executed straighter delivery. Former Indian spinner and selector Venkatapathy Raju noted that Suthar's familiarity with subcontinental conditions, coupled with his recent stint in county cricket with Warwickshire, has significantly contributed to his rapid development. Raju praised Suthar's high-arm action and aggressive mindset, suggesting that his experiences have bolstered his confidence and skill set.

Devdutt Padikkal seized his opportunity to shine, marking his return to Test cricket after a 19-month hiatus due to injury. Stepping in for the sidelined Sai Sudharsan at the number three position, Padikkal delivered a standout performance, scoring a magnificent 167 runs in the first innings, followed by a solid 44 in the second. His ability to handle spin effectively on both the front and back foot has strengthened his case for a permanent spot in the batting order.

India's vice-captain KL Rahul commended Padikkal's innings, emphasizing its significance in the context of the match. "That innings defined the Test," Rahul remarked, highlighting Padikkal's ability to maintain a strong tempo and convert his start into a substantial score. The partnership between Rahul and Padikkal, which yielded 150 runs, was pivotal in setting the tone for India's victory.
