With the 2028 T20 World Cup on the horizon, India is using its current series against the West Indies to test squad depth and address critical selection battles across batting and bowling roles.

India’s T20I Squad Selection Heats Up Ahead of 2028 World Cup Cycle

With the 2028 T20 World Cup still over two years away, the Indian cricket team has entered a crucial phase of experimentation. The current five-match T20I series against the West Indies, followed immediately by a tour of New Zealand, provides the team management with a vital window to assess resources and refine their squad composition for future global tournaments.

While the focus remains on building a competitive side, several individual players are fighting to cement their positions. Abhishek Sharma has established a firm foothold in the side, but his opening partner, Sanju Samson, continues to face intense scrutiny. Samson recently responded to the pressure with a commanding 82 off 41 balls in the second T20I, though he faces stiff competition from the rising Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and the versatile Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is actively developing his wicketkeeping skills to increase his selection prospects.

Middle-Order Dynamics and All-Rounder Contests

The middle order has seen significant evolution, particularly with Tilak Varma adapting to a lower-order role. After initial frustrations regarding his batting position following the 2026 T20 World Cup, Varma has demonstrated his value with high-impact cameos, including an unbeaten 51 off 22 balls against Pakistan in the Asian Games and a rapid 44 not out in Ranchi. His ability to maintain a high strike rate has been a notable positive for the team.

Meanwhile, the battle for the seam-bowling all-rounder position is intensifying. Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy are the primary contenders, though their paths may be complicated by the fitness status of Hardik Pandya. While Dube has struggled with consistency, conceding 30 runs in two overs during the Ranchi fixture, the 23-year-old Reddy is viewed as a superior bowling option with a rapidly developing batting profile, despite not yet featuring in the current series.

Pitch Concerns and Tactical Challenges

Head coach Gautam Gambhir has voiced strong concerns regarding the nature of the surfaces provided during the series. Following the West Indies' successful chase of 250 in the second T20I—the second-highest in the format's history—Gambhir highlighted the lack of balance between bat and ball, suggesting that such conditions place undue pressure on bowlers. The impact of dew, which has made gripping the ball difficult in the second innings, has further complicated the challenge for the bowling attack.

Attention now shifts to the Holkar Stadium in Indore for the third T20I. Known for its flat deck and short boundaries, the venue is expected to produce another high-scoring encounter. With the pitch traditionally favoring batters and dew likely to be a factor once again, the Indian management, led by Gambhir, has already begun inspecting the conditions to prepare for what is anticipated to be another run-fest. As the team looks toward the future, the performance of young pacers like Mayank Yadav and the impending return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the New Zealand tour will be key indicators of the side's depth.
