India's top international cricketers have returned to domestic action in the Ranji Trophy, with Ravindra Jadeja hitting a century and Mohammed Shami impressing, while KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal faced early-season challenges.

India Stars Return to Ranji Trophy Action Ahead of New Zealand Tour

The BCCI’s mandate requiring international players to participate in domestic cricket has brought a host of India’s biggest names back into the Ranji Trophy spotlight. Following the precedent set last season by veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, several current stars have utilized the opening round of the domestic campaign to sharpen their skills ahead of upcoming international assignments, including the highly anticipated tour of New Zealand.

The results across the board were mixed, offering a clear look at the current form of players vying for spots in the national setup. While some established stars found their rhythm, others struggled to make an impact, highlighting the competitive nature of India’s domestic red-ball circuit as players look to solidify their standing before the Test series begins on November 19.

Mixed Results for India's Batting Core

Ravindra Jadeja provided the standout batting performance of the round, anchoring his side with a composed 102 for Saurashtra. The century, his 16th in first-class cricket, served as a timely confidence boost for the all-rounder, who had not batted in a competitive match since August 23. Having endured a quiet series in Sri Lanka, the innings demonstrated that his ability to construct long scores remains intact as he prepares for the New Zealand tour.

In contrast, it was a difficult outing for KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rahul, representing Karnataka, endured a rare failure against Andhra Pradesh, managing only four runs in the first innings and one in the second. The opener will look to bounce back quickly during the upcoming three red-ball matches in Lincoln, which begin on October 24. Meanwhile, Jaiswal’s domestic season got off to a frustrating start as the Mumbai opener was dismissed for a 13-ball duck against Chandigarh. Despite his recent success in the ODI format, Jaiswal is aiming to rediscover his red-ball consistency ahead of his first national team tour to New Zealand.

Bowling Performances and National Contention

The bowling department saw Mohammed Shami make a compelling case for a national recall. Playing for Bengal against Delhi, the experienced pacer was instrumental in his team's comprehensive victory. Shami claimed 4/30 in the first innings and followed up with 1/29 from 18 overs in the second, proving his fitness and effectiveness after more than a year away from the international stage. His performance has reignited discussions regarding his potential return to the Indian squad.

Elsewhere, Mohammed Siraj sought to build rhythm for Hyderabad in their clash against Tripura. After a wicketless first innings, the pacer found his groove in the second, finishing with figures of 2/19 from nine overs. While his workload remains a point of focus for selectors, the outing provided Siraj with valuable time in the middle to refine his bowling ahead of the busy international schedule.
