India Takes 178-Run Lead Against Sri Lanka in 1st Test as Suthar and Jadeja Shine with Spin in Galle

On a rain-affected third day of the first Test in Galle, India’s spin duo of Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja played pivotal roles in dismantling Sri Lanka’s batting lineup, leading to the hosts being bowled out for 284 runs. Despite a valiant effort from Sri Lanka, highlighted by Sonal Dinusha's maiden international century and Niroshan Dickwella's solid 80, India maintained a commanding first-innings lead of 178 runs.

Resilient Partnership Stalls Indian Momentum

India seemed poised to take control early in the match, reducing Sri Lanka to a precarious 99 for 5 by lunchtime. Suthar, showcasing his skills with flight and turn, spearheaded the attack, while the Indian bowlers exerted relentless pressure on a pitch that favored spin. However, Dinusha and Dickwella turned the tide with a remarkable sixth-wicket partnership, amassing 146 runs off 216 balls. Their approach was marked by patience and strategic shot selection, effectively utilizing the sweep against the Indian spinners.

Both batsmen displayed a disciplined approach, waiting for the right opportunities rather than chasing deliveries outside their off-stump. Dickwella reached his half-century in 67 balls, while Dinusha took 92 balls to achieve the same milestone. Their partnership extended into the second session, allowing Sri Lanka to add 116 runs without losing a wicket, much to the frustration of the Indian side.

India's Spin Attack Prevails

India finally broke through in the final session when Dickwella, who had been dropped earlier, edged a delivery from Prasidh Krishna to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant after scoring 80 runs off 115 balls. Dinusha continued to resist, eventually completing his century off 167 balls, but his innings came to an abrupt end when Jadeja trapped him leg before wicket, concluding a commendable 100-run effort.

India's bowlers had made their mark almost immediately after concluding their first innings at 462. Sri Lanka's hopes for a strong start were dashed when Nishan Fernando fell to Mohammed Siraj on just the second ball. Suthar quickly made his presence felt, claiming Dinesh Chandimal's wicket with his first delivery, showcasing his ability to extract turn and dip while maintaining impressive speed. Although Lahiru Udara and Kamindu Mendis provided a brief resistance, Suthar and Jadeja's consistent wicket-taking ensured India remained firmly in control, despite Sri Lanka's late efforts to stabilize their innings.
