Addressing the media during the post-match press conference, Gambhir clarified that the decision to sideline Sooryavanshi was based on merit and the existing hierarchy within the squad rather than the player's age. He noted that while the coaching staff is fully aware of the teenager's immense potential, those who have been performing at the top level for several years must take precedence.
Gambhir stated that the conversation with Sooryavanshi was transparent, assuring the youngster that his time will come. The coach added that when the opportunity eventually arrives, the player will be granted a sustained run in the side. He stressed that the principles of Indian cricket demand healthy competition, regardless of whether a player is 15 or 30 years old, and that patience is a fundamental requirement for every squad member.

The series against Afghanistan also saw a return to the opening partnership that spearheaded India's recent T20 World Cup triumph. Gambhir defended this selection, arguing that a few isolated poor performances do not diminish the quality of proven players. He pointed to the team's unbeaten run between World Cups as evidence of their collective strength, dismissing the notion that a brief slump in form should lead to immediate squad upheaval.
Sanju Samson justified the management's faith by scoring a half-century in the second T20I and following it up with another fifty in the series finale. Abhishek Sharma also made a significant impact, notably smashing 108 runs off just 34 balls. Gambhir acknowledged the difficulty of previous selection decisions, specifically citing the challenge of omitting Samson during the recent England series, but reiterated that the current focus remains on maintaining the stability of the World Cup-winning core.
Sooryavanshi, who holds the record as India's youngest T20I debutant, previously gained attention during the England series where he scored 42 runs across three matches. He later showcased his capabilities against Zimbabwe, finishing as the leading run-scorer with 151 runs at a strike rate of 196.10, an effort that earned him the Player of the Series award.
