Australian batter
England's Cricket Regulator confirmed on Thursday that the positive result was for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. The sample was analysed at a laboratory in France after being collected following Northamptonshire's successful campaign to secure their third T20 Blast title. Lynn had contributed scores of 39 and four during the two matches played on Finals Day.
Details of the suspension and admission
Following the notification of the adverse finding on July 31, Lynn was placed under a provisional suspension. He subsequently admitted to the use of the substance, clarifying that the consumption occurred outside of sporting competition and was unrelated to his performance on the field. According to the disclosure, the usage took place during the evening of July 15 and into the early hours of July 16.
The Cricket Regulator initially brought two charges against the player under the England and Wales Cricket Board's anti-doping regulations. However, one charge was later withdrawn after it was determined that the concentration of the substance in the sample fell below the minimum threshold established by the World Anti-Doping Agency. While the regulator initially proposed a three-month ban, this was reduced to one month after Lynn successfully completed a substance abuse treatment programme, which he finished on August 30.
Career context and recent activity
Prior to the positive test, Lynn had been involved in Northamptonshire's quarter-final victory over Gloucestershire on July 15, where he retired hurt after being struck on the foot by a delivery from Duan Jansen. Following the T20 Blast, he travelled to Sri Lanka to compete in the Lanka Premier League for the Galle Gallants, though his participation was limited to a single match before he was ruled out on July 29 due to an unspecified leg injury.
Lynn, who has represented Australia in 18 T20Is and four ODIs, has remained sidelined from professional cricket since his suspension began. Regarding his future, he has yet to officially sign a contract for the upcoming Big Bash League season, despite reports in Australian media suggesting an agreement to join the Melbourne Renegades.
