Chennai Super Kings Acquire Liam Livingstone in Trade Deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad

Ahead of the November 17 deadline for IPL franchises to finalize their squad lists, Chennai Super Kings have executed a major trade deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad. The move sees fast bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis head to the Sunrisers, while the Super Kings have secured the services of all-rounders Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards.

The financial details of the trade indicate that Livingstone will join the Chennai setup for a fee of Rs 6 crore, a reduction from the Rs 13 crore he commanded at the previous auction. Jack Edwards joins at his existing price of Rs 3 crore. Conversely, Sunrisers Hyderabad have acquired Khaleel Ahmed, who was previously valued at Rs 4.8 crore, and Nathan Ellis, who held a price tag of Rs 2 crore.

Strategic Shift for Chennai Super Kings

The decision to release two established fast bowlers has prompted discussion regarding the franchise's strategy. Khaleel Ahmed had been a part of the Chennai squad during the 2025 season, though his 2026 campaign was curtailed by a quadriceps injury. Nathan Ellis also faced fitness challenges, having missed the entirety of the 2026 season due to a hamstring injury.

Addressing the rationale behind the trade, Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan emphasized that the decision was the result of a collective assessment by the team's leadership group. He noted that the franchise's think tank, which includes Ruturaj Gaikwad, Zaheer Khan, and MS Dhoni, evaluated the squad's requirements before finalizing the move.

Impact on Squad Dynamics

For the Super Kings, the addition of Liam Livingstone provides a wealth of T20 experience. The all-rounder has accumulated 8,595 runs and claimed 171 wickets across 370 T20 appearances. Despite his limited involvement with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2026 season, where he played only two matches, the Chennai management appears to be banking on his proven ability to deliver match-winning performances. Viswanathan suggested that the lack of opportunities for Livingstone in the previous season was a factor considered during the negotiations.

For Sunrisers Hyderabad, the trade serves to reinforce their pace bowling department. The move marks a return to the franchise for Khaleel Ahmed, who has previously represented the team. Both sides will now look to finalize their remaining retention and release lists before the upcoming deadline, as teams prepare for the next phase of the IPL cycle.
