Lille President Olivier Letang Handed Four-Month Suspension Following Referee Criticism

Lille president Olivier Letang has been handed a four-month suspension following his public criticism of match officials after his club's Ligue 1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this season. A spokesperson for the club confirmed the sanction on Thursday, marking a significant escalation in the disciplinary action taken against the executive.

The decision follows an appeal by the French football federation (FFF), which challenged an initial ruling made by the league's disciplinary commission in September. While the commission had originally issued a 20,000 euro fine, the FFF argued that the penalty was insufficient, leading the governing body's appeals committee to impose the more severe four-month ban.

Background of the Disciplinary Action

The controversy stems from a 2-2 draw between Lille and PSG in late August. Following the match, Letang expressed strong dissatisfaction with the officiating, specifically targeting the amount of stoppage time added and the decision to appoint Eric Wattellier as the referee for the fixture.

Letang publicly labeled the officiating situation a scandal. His frustration extended beyond post-match comments, as he reportedly sent formal emails to French refereeing chief Antony Gautier, as well as officials at both the FFF and the French league. In one of these communications, Letang stated that his club could no longer accept being refereed by Wattellier.

Legal Recourse and Disciplinary History

In response to the suspension, Letang issued a statement to AFP confirming his intention to challenge the ruling. He indicated that he plans to pursue all available avenues of appeal, which may include taking the case to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF).

This is not the first time the Lille president has faced disciplinary measures regarding his conduct toward officials. Earlier this year, in January, Letang served a suspension of more than two months for remarks directed at Wattellier. Furthermore, he was fined 10,000 euros by UEFA in 2025 after he criticized an official following Lille's Europa League defeat to PAOK Salonika.
