As Cheteshwar Pujara observes India and Sri Lanka at Colombo's Sinhalese Sports Club on Sunday, he recalls early memories of this place.

Pujara supports Padikkal for the No. 3 spot and insists Sai Sudharsan should be included in India's Test strategy.

As Cheteshwar Pujara prepares to witness the clash between India and Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo this Sunday, he is likely to reflect on his memorable innings of 145 not out from 2015. On that occasion, Pujara's remarkable performance helped India secure a 117-run victory, clinching the series 2-1 against Sri Lanka on a pitch that surprisingly offered seam movement, a rarity in the subcontinent.

“I have cherished memories of playing at SSC, but the conditions in 2015 were quite different. We encountered a surprisingly seaming track in Sri Lanka, which is not something you typically see there,” Pujara remarked during a recent discussion.

Pujara's Insights on Emerging Talent

Having previously held the crucial No. 3 batting position for India, Pujara expressed admiration for Devdutt Padikkal's recent performance in the first Test. He acknowledged Padikkal's readiness for the challenge, attributing it to his impressive displays in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). “Devdutt was well-prepared for this opportunity, especially considering his recent form and the improvements he has made to his technique,” Pujara noted.

While Pujara supports Padikkal's inclusion at No. 3, he also emphasized the importance of considering other talented players like Sai Sudharsan. “I believe India should continue with Padikkal at No. 3 for a while. However, it’s essential not to overlook someone like Sai Sudharsan in the Test squad. While I’m not suggesting he should bat at No. 3, he certainly deserves to be part of the broader selection discussions,” he added.

Pujara further advised against placing excessive pressure on Padikkal, suggesting that consistent performances in upcoming matches, particularly during the series in New Zealand and the home series against Australia, will be crucial for Padikkal to solidify his position in the team. “If he can maintain his form, he will undoubtedly secure his spot, but we must allow him the space to grow,” Pujara concluded.
