In a remarkable display of talent and determination, Indian badminton players Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly have secured a historic women's doubles medal at the BWF World Championships, despite narrowly missing out on a spot in the finals. Their journey came to an end in the semifinals, where they faced the formidable duo of Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, the reigning world champions and top seeds. The match concluded with scores of 21-18, 13-21, and 8-21, marking a significant achievement for Indian badminton.

A Historic Achievement for Indian Badminton

This medal is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first time since 2011 that an Indian women's doubles team has reached the podium at the World Championships. Back then, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa brought home a bronze medal from London. The accomplishment of Gopichand and Jolly places them among an elite group of Indian athletes who have excelled on this prestigious international stage.

Reflecting on their achievement, Treesa expressed her joy at joining this exclusive club of medalists. "Being into that club, I feel so happy. There is a lot of journey we have in the future. I feel like this is just the start," she stated during a post-match interview. She also acknowledged the support of their team, hinting at a celebratory lunch to express their gratitude.

The timing of their success coincided with the announcement of their Arjuna Award earlier in the week, which Treesa noted provided an additional boost to their performance. "We just need to take this as a positive and in a confident way. Even that Arjuna Award this week when they announced, I feel like that also gave us some other boost in this tournament," she remarked.

Reflections on the Journey

Despite the disappointment of not reaching the finals, Treesa was optimistic about their overall performance throughout the tournament. "If you see the whole week, it has been amazing. We have made so much of upset and it's such a great week for us," she said, highlighting the memorable matches they played and the lessons learned.

Gayatri also shared insights into the mental challenges they faced, particularly after a grueling previous match. "Yesterday was a pretty intense match. So mentally it was pretty tough. Today when we were on court, we were fresh in the first set as well. Sometimes you do get a little tired mentally," she explained.

Both players acknowledged the role of luck in high-stakes situations, with Treesa stating, "I feel like in the crucial situations, it's like with confidence and luck, everything will come together." Their journey at the World Championships has not only elevated their status in the sport but has also instilled a renewed sense of belief in their potential as a formidable team.
